Why Rock Chip Repair Is Worth Doing Right Away
Freeway gravel, construction trucks, and debris kicked up on the 10 and the 215 make chipped windshields a daily fact of life in the Inland Empire. A fast rock chip repair seals the damage before heat, cold, and road vibration turn it into a crack that runs across the glass.
Inland Empire weather makes the clock tick faster. A hot windshield hit with cold air conditioning, or a cold morning followed by the defroster, puts stress right at the weak spot. Repairing early usually means:
- You keep your original factory windshield and its factory seal.
- You avoid the cost and time of a full replacement.
- The chip becomes much less noticeable and stops collecting dirt.
Can My Chip Be Repaired?
Many chips can be repaired, but not all of them. As a general guide, a chip is a good repair candidate when:
- It is smaller than a quarter, or a short crack only a few inches long.
- It is not directly in the driver's line of sight.
- It is not touching the edge of the windshield.
- It has not been packed with dirt or water for a long time.
If the damage is too large or in the wrong spot, a repair can leave a distortion or fail to hold. In that case we'll recommend a windshield replacement and explain why. For a deeper look, read rock chip repair vs. replacement.
Common types of chips
- Bullseye: a round, cone-shaped mark.
- Star break: a center point with small cracks branching out.
- Combination break: a bullseye with legs, very common from highway rocks.
- Half-moon: a partial bullseye shaped like a crescent.
How Our Rock Chip Repair Works
- Inspect. We check the size, type, and location of the chip to make sure a repair makes sense.
- Clean. Loose glass and debris are carefully removed from the impact point.
- Mount the bridge tool. A repair bridge is attached over the chip to create a tight seal.
- Inject resin. Air is drawn out and clear resin is pushed deep into every leg of the break.
- Cure. The resin is hardened with UV light so it bonds with the glass.
- Finish. We scrape and polish the surface so it's smooth to the touch.
An honest note: a repaired chip usually looks much better, but it may not disappear completely. The main goal is restoring strength and stopping the spread.
Rock Chip Repair Cost and Insurance
Chip repair is typically much less expensive than replacing the windshield. Many comprehensive policies cover chip repair, sometimes with little or no out-of-pocket cost, but every policy is different. We can help you check and walk you through the claim on our insurance claims page, or you can request a quote to pay directly.
Compared to a full replacement, a repair also has practical advantages. The windshield stays in place, so the factory seal is never disturbed, and on most vehicles the forward camera isn't touched, which means no calibration is needed. It's the fastest, simplest fix when the damage qualifies.
When repair isn't enough
If a chip has already started to run, or the damage is large or in the driver's view, repair stops being the right answer. We'll tell you plainly and give you a quote for replacement so you can compare your options before deciding.
What to Do Until We Get There
- Cover the chip with a small piece of clear tape to keep dirt and water out.
- Park in the shade or a garage when you can.
- Avoid blasting the A/C or defroster directly at the glass.
- Skip the car wash and avoid slamming doors.
- Don't press on the chip or try to clean it out.
Most of all, don't wait weeks. The longer a chip sits, the more dirt and moisture get inside, and the harder it is to get a clean, strong repair. A chip that could have been repaired today can become a crack that needs a new windshield next week.
